Nutritional Research Update
Glutamine decreases risk of post-surgical infections
Efficacy of Parenteral Nutrition Supplemented With Glutamine Dipeptide to Decrease Hospital Infections in Critically Ill Surgical Patients. Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition recent issues. Vol. 32, No. 4, 389-402 (2008).
Nosocomial infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU). Thus 59 patients were given 1.5g/kg/day post surgery. Conclusion: Glutamine dipeptide-supplemented patients had a significant decrease in infections in after cardiac, vascular, and colonic surgery
Chlorella, weight loss, and improved lipid metabolism???
Nutrigenomic Studies of Effects of Chlorella on Subjects with High-Risk Factors for Lifestyle-Related Disease. Journal of Medicinal Food. September 1, 2008, 11(3): 395-404
“Chlorella ingestion tests on 17 subjects with high-risk factors for lifestyle-related diseases and 17 healthy subjects over a 16-week period….Chlorella intake resulted in noticeable reductions in body fat percentage, serum total cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose levels….genes (were affected) related to signal transduction molecules, metabolic enzymes, receptors, transporters, and cytokines..These included genes involved in fat metabolism and insulin signaling pathways, which suggests that these pathways could be physiologically affected by Chlorella intake”
Antioxidants (C, E, Se) lower mortality following injury
Impact of High-Dose Antioxidants on Outcomes in Acutely Injured Patients. Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Vol. 32, No. 4, 384-388 (2008)
“The profound oxidative stress that occurs following injury results in significant depletion of many endogenous antioxidants (vitamin C, E, selenium). Increasing evidence suggests antioxidant supplementation reduces infectious complications and organ dysfunction following injury and hemorrhagic shock……Mortality was significantly lower in the AO+ group….A high-dose antioxidant protocol resulted in a 28% relative risk reduction in mortality and a significant reduction in both hospital and ICU length of stay“
